HUTTO – Hippos youth football and Lady Hippos youth volleyball both hosted camps this week as Hutto Independent School district will transition from summer into the fall sports season. HIPPOS YOUTH FOOTBALL For incoming third through ninth graders, the Hippos got to take the field at Hutto Memorial Stadium on July 24-26 for the annual three-day youth football camp.

Taylor High School athletics will officially be back for the 2023 fall sports season this Monday morning as the Ducks and Lady Ducks start practices. First-year athletic director and Taylor varsity football head coach Earven Flowers will have his team ready to grind at 6 a.m.

GRANGER – Granger Independent School District is wrapping up summer activities as the Lions and Lady Lions prepare for the fall sports season. LIONS YOUTH FOOTBALL For incoming first through ninth graders, young Lions came out to play on July 25-27 for the annual three-day youth football camp with well over 40 kids on the first day.

THRALL – Thrall High School has an important upcoming date at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug.

YOUNGSVILLE, LOUISIANA – The 6U Taylor Ducks youth baseball team capped off a season to remember July 19-22 at the 2023 South Zone Shetland World Series held in Louisiana as the team went 2-4 against great competition.

Alleyne Francique, coach of Taylor’s own superstar runner Fred Kerley, had an interview earlier this month with Sheila Vieira of Olympics.com and discussed training techniques that Kerley implements to get him to the next level.

Murphy Park will be the site of an upcoming kids’ tennis camp as the Taylor Area Tennis Association, Taylor Parks & Recreation and Taylor Independent School have come together to host the event. The youth tennis camp, which will be held from 8-10 a.m.

GRANGER – Granger Independent School District will return to having youth athletic camps this upcoming week as Lions football and Lady Lions volleyball will both be in action. Each will be a three-day youth camp that goes from 9-11 a.m.

THRALL – Thrall High School has an important upcoming date at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug.

The Taylor Lions Club will host a golf tournament Saturday, Aug. 26 at Mustang Creek Golf Course in Taylor.

Residents got moving to the beat last week at drum fit lessons. The first class had 19 participants. Drum fit is part of the free adult fitness classes, which conclude July 29. As a part of the introductory promotion, Taylor Parks and Recreation hosts free classes in the air-conditioned Memorial Field House at Parks and Recreation office, 1412 Davis Street.

July is already coming to an end as Taylor High School varsity football is less than two weeks away from putting on the pads and helmets again. Taylor athletic director and head football coach Earven Flowers put out an announcement last week for Ducks football players, their families and the community with some important upcoming dates regarding the program.

ARLINGTON – Taylor High School varsity football was represented over the weekend as senior linebacker Jaden Rush attended the Junior Day Football National Showcase camp on July 16 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

CHORZÓW, POLAND – Taylor’s own Fred Kerley went up against some fierce competition on Sunday, July 16 as the star sprinter competed in the men’s 100-meter dash at the Silesia Diamond League. Against a very strong field, the reigning 100-meter world champion Kerley was defeated for the first time in 2023 in the event as Akani Simbine of South Africa edged him in a thrilling race with a photo finish to determine the winner.

During this time of year, baseball fans often think about the MLB and its famous home run derby competition. In Taylor, Texas, the Taylor 6u Ducks decided to hold their own competition to raise funds for their upcoming trip to the Pony World Series in Youngsville, LA.
