Local bookstores ready for Independent Bookstore Day

Taylor’s two bookstores, Curio Mrvosa and Libros Bookmobile will celebrate in the 10th anniversary of Independent Bookstore Day. “Independent Bookstore Day is more than a celebration of indie bookstores, it’s a celebration of everything we stand for — community, inclusion, literacy and representation for all — and not just in our town but everywhere indie bookstores are,” said Veronica Soliz Johnson, owner of Libros Bookmobile.

This weekend, a newly formed child advocacy organization spearheaded by Taylorites is inviting families to a morning of exercise, giveaways, information booths, live music, kid’s activities and lunch—all completely free of charge And while organizers promise fun for all ages, the point is to address the serious problem of childhood sexual abuse and to provide information on where families can get help and support.

HUTTO – The announcement that Academy Sports + Outdoors will break ground this month on their new location was met with cheers from the audience at the April 6 City Council meeting. Austin Alvis, president of NewQuest Properties, told council that the national chain hopes to open in Townwest Commons no later than next spring.

HUTTO – Signing day is significant for athletes moving on to the next level, but it had a different meaning for some new Hippos. On Friday, March 31, Hutto ISD held a signing day, offering intent to hire letters to seven spring student teachers and one fall student teacher.

The hunt for fun

Easter weekend was a time to hunt for fun in Taylor. On Saturday, April 8, the city and Frontier Bank hosted the annual Easter Egg Hunt in Heritage Square. With more then 10,000 eggs filled with candy and prizes, the park was filled with families there to hunt eggs and meet the Easter Bunny.

Police release racial profiling report

EDIE ZUVANICH Special to the Press HUTTO – There were no complaints of racial profiling filed against the Hutto Police Department or any of its officers in 2022, which means the department is in full compliance with the Texas Racial Profiling Law. “In response to (Texas Code of Criminal Procedures Article 3.05), we have policies in place in our department that prohibit officers from engaging in racial profiling or stopping or detaining or searching any individual based upon their race, their background, their sexual orientation, religion or anything,” Chief Jeffrey Yarbrough told City Council during their March 23 meeting.
