Betty Marie (Leschber) Smith, or “Bree” as family and friends knew her, passed away on January 27, 2023, at the age of 87. She was born in Taylor, to parents Wilhelm “Willie” and Lena (Simank) Leschber.

HUTTO, Texas — The Hutto Independent School District is taking major steps to address current and future enrollment growth. At their January 26 meeting, the Hutto ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved calling a $522 million bond election, funded through additional property value growth within the district and with zero increase to the tax rate, following the district’s Long Range Facilities Planning Committee’s recommended project list to the school board.

Voters within Hutto ISD’s boundaries will have the opportunity to cast their votes on three propositions during the May 6 election. Items in the 2023 Bond proposal include: • Build-out of Ninth Grade Center to a second, Comprehensive High School - $180,000,000 • High School Renovations and Additions (final phases) - $68,000,000 • Existing Middle School Classroom Additions (Hutto & Farley middle schools) - $14,000,000 • Purchase Land for Future School Sites $32,000,000 • Districtwide Technology Upgrades $10,500,000 • Buses and Satellite Operations - $10,000,000 • Deferred Maintenance Projects - $24,000,000 • Instructional Technology Devices TOTAL: $10,500,000 PROPOSITION C • District Academic Center: includes River Horse Academy, DAEP, 18+ Special Education Program and Central Office TOTAL: $40,000,000.

Student chefs in the Taylor High School Culinary Arts classes, also known as The Duck B th ac to la b l p Brigade, put their newly acquired skills the test last week in a burger challenge competition. Twelve students created their own original variations, looking for the perfectly moist and flavorful burger with the perfect accompanying sauce.

HUTTO – The student whose hoax caused Hutto High School to hold students in class on Tuesday, Jan. 24, while social media buzzed with anxious parents fearing the worst, has been has been identified by the school and is facing disciplinary charges. Since the perpetrator is a student, no other details will be released to the public.
