WALLER – The Taylor Ducks started their playoff journey at Waller High School Thursday, May 4, and only needed five innings to get the job done. The Ducks faced Houston Scarborough in round one and shut them out on their way to an 18-0 victory.

At the April 27 meeting of the Taylor City Council, Jose Barraza, one of the volunteer coaches at Thunderbird Wrestling Club, which meets at Concept Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, 310 N. Main St., said grappling is still alive and well in the city. “We have a wrestling club that has been meeting for a couple of years,” said Barraza, who attended the meeting with his two boys, Vincent, 13 and Adrian, 11. “We grapple. We do folk style wrestling, which is kind of traditional kind of what evolved from Pet Brown, but Pet brown’s style still had submissions, which were dangerous locks. Learn to Fish Day Summer is approaching, and so is the common activity of fishing. Learn to fish at the Southwest Williamson County Regional Park in Leander from 8 a.m.

A group of Taylor High School students observed a Day of Service at Down Home Ranch on April 20, to mark the anniversary of the Columbine school shooting. The effort was led by THS counselor and Columbine graduate, Laurie Morris.

On Thursday, May 4, Oasis Church in Taylor hosted the National Day of Prayer in Heritage Square. Led by youth from local churches, they joined the nation in calling on a higher power to watch over the country.

The Junior Woman’s Study Club gathered at the Thrall Country Diner for their April 13, luncheon meeting with 26 members present. Hostesses for the event included Martha Griffith, Betty Inman, Ginny McAlister, Liz 0’Dell and Darlene Rydell. Before the meal, Griffith gave a reading and the blessing.

Amber Nunnery is in her fourth year of teaching English in Taylor ISD, sixth year in education. She was inspired to become a teacher by her high school theater teacher, and the way that teacher had of empowering students through storytelling and pushing them to use skills they didn’t know they had. This, along with learning the value of words, effectiveness of stories and importance of critical thought inspired Nunnery to teach English.

A much beloved sports icon from Taylor’s early days is being honored today. At the April 27th meeting of the Taylor City Council, city leaders read a proclamation designating May 6, 2023, as “Pet Brown Day” to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the untimely shooting death of Elmer “Pet” Brown, a world champion wrestler from Taylor, born in 1888.

During Winter Storm Mara, Taylor was one of the hardest hit communities in Texas, with approximately 8,600 customers without power during the storm’s peak, which took place from Jan. 31 – Feb. 2, 2023, and caused downed tree limbs, power lines and utility poles, as well as more than $5.3 million direct cleanup costs for the city.
