Shuford named commissioner of state health services

AUSTIN – Jennifer Shuford has been named commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services, state officials announced just before the new year. Shuford’s leadership of the department was made permanent months after she took over, in an interim capacity, for longtime commissioner John Hellerstedt following his September retirement.

HUTTO – Texas continues to officially recognize the second Monday in October as Columbus Day, and the White House recognizes the day as both Columbus Day and Indigenous People’s Day concurrently. Hutto, however, has seen the last of Christopher Columbus Day, at least as far as holidays go.

A breath of fresh air

In rural areas of Liberia, many hospitals do not have supplemental oxygen for patients, due decades of civil war that destroyed the country’s infrastructure. To help, the Rotary Club of Taylor, the Rotary E-Club of Central Texas, as well as several other clubs, are partnering with the Rotary Club of Sinkor, Liberia, to fund an oxygen regeneration plant that could be used for 77 Liberian hospitals and clinics.

Rotary club installs Little Free Library

On Friday, December 16 members of the Rotary Club of Taylor installed a Little Library in front of the St. Paul House on Seventh Street. This Little Library will be cared for by the St. Paul Lutheran Child Development Center teachers and students.

Hutto parks ban glitter, confetti

HUTTO – If you’re planning a party at any of Hutto’s parks this holiday season, leave your silly string and glass containers at home or you may face a fine up to $200. Hutto City Council recently passed an ordinance changing some of the park rules. The new rules are already in effect, but the signage has not yet been updated.

Hippo nation on the move

HUTTO – Hutto Independent School District Board of Trustees is considering a $482 million bond package that will pay for new schools, renovation and maintenance of existing schools and technology upgrades. If it proceeds, the bond will be on the ballot in May, 2023.
