Sheriff, commissioners bicker over budget

GEORGETOWN – A perceived staffing shortage has led Williamson County Sheriff’s Office to speak out against County Commissioners. Citing an internal salary study that suggests the county would need over 400 additional deputies to meet the national average for staffing, the Sheriff’s Office and the Williamson County Deputies Association asked commissioners for a budget allotment that would fund just over 20 additional hires.

Ducks lose heartbreaker to Hornets

GATESVILLE – Despite an incredible start in the first quarter, the Taylor Ducks let one slip away on the road Friday night as they were edged 34-27 by the Hornets of Gatesville High School. “We beat ourselves tonight with costly penalties, being undisciplined and things like that,” Taylor head coach Earven Flowers said to his players after the game.

HUTTO – The Stars and Stripes were flying high Friday night in Hutto, as was the local football team, as they defeated the San Marcos Rattlers 66-35 for their first win of the season. “We played passionate, and we played physical, now we just have to clean up some discipline and detail aspects then the sky is the limit,” Hippos head coach Will Compton said.

THRALL – Tuesday night’s matchup between the Thrall Tigerettes (13-2) and Troy Trojanettes (10-6) was a battle of Top 20 teams. The Tigerettes entered the match ranked fifth in Class 2A in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association poll, while Troy was ranked nineteenth in Class 3A.

Taylor High School varsity volleyball had its second home match of the season on Tuesday night in front of a packed gym as the Lady Ducks hosted Granger High School and swept the Lady Lions in three straight sets: 25-23, 25-9 and 25-14 to seal the deal.

EDC CEO Thomas announces retirement

A key figure involved in bringing Samsung Austin Semiconductor to Taylor is retiring this fall. At the regular meeting of the Taylor City Council, Mark Thomas, the CEO of Taylor’s Economic Development Corporation, announced his plans to step down from his position in the next two months as he highlighted his department’s budget for next year.

Taylor cross country takes on Vista Ridge Invitational

CEDAR PARK – The Taylor High School boys and girls varsity cross country teams competed on Friday morning at the Vista Ridge Invitational meet held in Cedar Park. The Ducks had seven runners put in work in 1A-4A as the boys placed fifth out of 12 schools entered with 183 points in the meet, while the Lady Ducks also did well as the girls entered nine girls and placed eighth out of 14 schools who qualified enough runners with 218 points.
