CHEERS TO 50 YEARS

The Williamson County Retired Teachers Association (WCRTA) celebrated their 50th anniversary June 10 at their June meeting. Held in the Taylor ISD Event Center, the retired teachers received a proclamation from the state of Texas and celebrated with banners, balloons, cake and a toast to the past 50 years with excitement about the future.

Randall Craig installed officers for 2022-23. They are Diane Smith, president; Tammy Sefcik, first vice president; Arlene Steele, second vice president; and Arlene David, secretary.

Special guests included state representatives James Talarico, Terry Wilson and John Bucy. The three presented a proclamation in honor of the 50th anniversary that was read by Bucy.

Taylor ISD Superintendent Devin Padavil spoke to the group about the significant difference educators make in the lives of their students and asked the retired teachers for ideas for retaining quality staff.

The WCRTA Aspiring Educator Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 was awarded to Simon Carter, 2022 graduate of Hutto High School. Carter plans to attend Texas Tech as a music education major.

CONSTABLE WINS PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD

Williamson County Precinct 4 Constable Paul Leal was selected by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) to receive the 2022 State of Texas Law Enforcement Achievement Award for Public Service.

“I am thrilled and honored to be the state of Texas recipient, but the people on the east side of Williamson County were the real heroes,” said Leal. “We put out a call on social media for things people needed, and they met those needs. We picked up food, firewood, medication and more. They were the real heroes, I was just the delivery person.”
