Diane Renee (Batla) Volek

Diane Renee (Batla) Volek, 75, of Weir, passed away peacefully with her children by her side Thursday, May 23, 2024, at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Diane was born Oct. 17, 1948, at the Johns Clinic & Hospital in Taylor, to Joe and Mildred (Strmiska) Batla.

She graduated as the valedictorian and homecoming queen of Granger High School’s class of 1967, and later earned an associate of arts degree from Temple College Dec. 17, 1999.

On May 24, 1969, Diane married Melvin Volek.

She had a career at the Taylor City Hall and Taylor Brethren Church, where she also served as secretary. Diane dedicated 41 years to the S.P.J.S.T. Nursing Home as the business office manager, playing a pivotal role in establishing the S.P.J.S.T. Long Term Care facility and the new Skilled Nursing, Rehabilitation & Memory Care facility.

Diane had a deep love for music, directing and playing the piano for the Taylor Czech Chorus since the early 1990s.

She was also the pianist/ organist and a choir member at the Taylor Brethren Church, where she served on the Board of Elders and was a BYF sponsor. A highlight of her musical career was representing Texas at the 2008 Prague International Music Festival in the Czech Republic with the Taylor Czech Chorus.

Her hobbies included collecting antiques, sewing, watching Texas Longhorns sports and caring for her chickens, goats, donkeys and her beloved dog, Wally.

Diane was predeceased by her parents, Joe and Mildred Batla.

She is survived by her daughter, Christie (Volek) Mouton and her husband Alex Mouton of Granger; her son, Travis Volek and his wife Kim Volek of Buda; her grandchildren, Sarah Meza of Austin, Jaden Meza of Granger and Paul and Kaylin Volek of Buda; three stepgranddaughters, Layne, Rebecca and Kristene; her longtime friend and partner, Woody Richards of Weir; her sister, Sharon Kromas of Granger; and nephew, Jason Kromas of Austin.

Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m.

Thursday, May 30, at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor.

The funeral service was Friday, May 31, at 10 a.m. at Taylor Brethren Church, with burial at the Granger City Cemetery.
