He was born to Grover (Punch) Julius Gonzenbach and Helen Lawhon Gonzenbach Oct. 2, 1937, in Taylor. He grew up in nearby Rice’s Crossing and Taylor, where he graduated high school in 1956.
He attended Texas Lutheran College for two semesters before joining the military and completing Basic Training with the 47th Infantry at Fort Carson, Colorado, in 1958. In 1960, he transferred to the VIII US Army Corps Reserves for four years and resumed his college studies at the University of Texas in Austin. Don was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing and training hunting dogs. He was known for his great – sometimes sarcastic – sense of humor, devotion to his Texas Longhorns and his love of country music, especially songs by Willie Nelson.
Don is survived by his beloved wife, Wynell Gonzenbach of 24 years; children, Gary and wife Dawnelle, Lisa and husband George, Greg and stepson Jason and wife Rachel; 12 grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.
Don will be buried at a graveside memorial service May 30, at 3 p.m. at the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, 17701 Cameron Road in Pflugerville.
