Robert Clem Leatherman

Robert Clem Leatherman, 98, of Taylor, passed away from this life on March 6, 2024, at his home. He was born Jan. 17, 1926, in Bartlett RFD, to George Elbert and Ola Mae (Boyd) Leatherman.

He married the love of his life, Daphne Faye Leatherman May 31, 1952. Clem was a dedicated family man. He loved remodeling homes, gardening and barbecuing. He had a heart of gold and always helped everyone he met. Often opening his home to those in need including family, friends and strangers. He was a member of Walnut Creek Optimist Club in Austin, for many years he would help barbecue at C.A.M.P. C.A.M.P. in Center Point, where his grandson Robert attended for many summers.

He truly loved helping anyone in any way that he could. After retiring from construction, he helped his longtime friend Eddie Jinkins at The Station, a car lot Eddie owned in Taylor, until he officially retired to enjoy his life with gardening and spending time with his family. He was a true patriot. He served his country in WWII from 1944 to 1946.

He was preceded in death by parents, George Elbert and Ola Mae Leatherman; his beloved wife, Daphne Faye Leatherman; brother, George Elbert Jr.; halfbrother, Luke Jasper (LJ) Leatherman; brother, Gibbs Leatherman; sisters, Norma Lee Leschber, Agnes McAndrew, Emma Nell Harper and son-in-law Johnny Sanford.

He is survived by daughter, Pamela Sanford; son, Duane Leatherman (Kathleen); daughter, Rita Cocke (Bob); grandchildren, Robert Sanford, Travis Sanford (Samantha), Becca Cocke and Daniel Leatherman; sister, Thrya Whitfield (Hardy); and numerous nieces, nephews and so many friends too many to count.

Serving as pallbearers will be George Leatherman, Brian Whitfield, Richard Walton, Don Stanley, Gene Shaw and Erik Garcia. Honorary pallbearer will be Eddie Jinkins.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at Providence Funeral Home.

A celebration of life service will be Wednesday, March 13, at 10 a.m. at Providence Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Taylor City Cemetery.
