HUTTO — The Hutto Lady Hippos varsity softball team completed a thrilling 4-0 comeback to defeat Vista Ridge 5-4, securing a spot in the Class 6A-Division I playoffs.
Trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the sixth, Hutto loaded the bases on a single by M’Kayla Hicks, an error and a walk. Kenna Spence then delivered the game’s biggest moment — a threerun double that gave the Lady Hippos their first lead of the night.
The Rangers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first, scoring on three RBI singles. Vista Ridge added another run in the second to go up 4-0.
Hutto responded by scoring on an error in the bottom of the second to make it 4-1. The Lady Hippos inched closer in the third, plating another run on a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Both teams remained scoreless through the next two innings before Hutto’s sixth-inning rally.
Freshman pitcher Bailey Kelley tossed a complete game, allowing four runs and recording one strikeout over seven innings.
With the win, the Lady Hippos clinched third place in district play and will open the postseason against Lake Travis. The date and time of the bidistrict playoff game are yet to be determined.
