HUTTO — The Hutto Lady Hippos varsity softball team was shut out in a 5-0 loss to the Cedar Ridge Raiders on Friday, April 11.

The Lady Hippos’ offense struggled throughout the night, managing just two hits in 23 at-bats.

Freshman Bailey Kelley got the start in the circle for Hutto and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning to keep the game scoreless. The Lady Hippos reached base in the bottom half following a fielding error, but a pair of groundouts ended the threat.

After a scoreless second inning, the Raiders broke through with three runs in the top of the third, scoring on a pair of RBI doubles and an RBI single to take a 3-0 lead. Hutto senior Jayda Gallegos led off the bottom of the third with a single, but a groundout followed by two strikeouts ended the frame.

Both teams went quiet until the top of the seventh, when Cedar Ridge added insurance with a tworun home run. The Lady Hippos were retired in order in the bottom half.

Kelley was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs over six innings with one strikeout. Sophomore Molly Kreig pitched the seventh in relief, giving up two runs.

Hutto dropped to 9-11 overall and 9-5 in district play but remains in fourth place and firmly in control of a playoff spot.

The Lady Hippos faced Vandegrift on Tuesday, April 15, and will close out the regular season against Vista Ridge on Thursday, April 17, at 7 p.m.
