The Taylor Ducks varsity baseball team came up short in the series finale against Burnet, falling 5-2 on Friday, April 4. Despite a few bright spots at the plate, Taylor’s offense couldn’t find its rhythm, finishing just 6-for-28.
The Bulldogs grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, capitalizing on back-to-back walks and pushing a run across on a groundout. The Ducks threatened in the bottom half with a single from senior Triston Vega but couldn’t bring him around to score.
Taylor answered in the second. Freshman Tayden Talley singled, senior Kaddy Maravilla worked a walk, and a groundout later in the inning brought home the tying run to make it 1-1.
Burnet quickly regained control in the third, loading the bases with a double and two walks before stringing together two consecutive RBI singles to build a 4-1 lead. The Bulldogs tacked on another run in the fourth to stretch the advantage to 5-1.
Taylor chipped away in the sixth. Sophomore Mario Newman delivered an RBI single to bring the Ducks within three, but the late push fell short. Sophomore Mason Sunvison singled in the seventh to give Taylor life, but the rally ended with a strikeout by sophomore Mario Aguero.
Talley was charged with the loss, tossing four innings and allowing five runs while striking out two.
With the defeat, Taylor dropped to 3-11-1 overall and 1-5 in district play. The Ducks returned to the diamond Tuesday, April 8, against Gateway Preparatory, and will close out the series Friday, April 11, at 7 p.m.
