COUPLAND — Here is a roundup of what’s making the news in the little town with the big heart on Texas 95.

Huntington Sculpture Foundation Open House

Wells and Jessica Mason have organized the first Huntington Sculpture Foundation Open House at the Huntington Sculpture Garden, 212 N. Broad St., noon to 4 p.m.

Saturday, April 5.

In case of rain, the free event moves to Sunday, April 6.

Sculptures by Coupland’s internationally known Jim Huntington will be displayed, and guests can visit with the artist about his life’s work.

A talk is scheduled for 2 p.m.

The Masons own Coupland’s Ironwood Industries, specializing in sculptural objects, architectural elements and architectural hardware.

Coupland Civic Organization

The Coupland Civic Organization, the Williamson County Office of Emergency Management and the National Weather Service hosted Skywarn Storm Spotter Training March 31 at St. Peter’s Church of Coupland.

The session was conducted by Paul Yura, an NWS warning coordination meteorologist and Trey Hewtty, emergency management specialist with the county.

In addition, the CCO’s April 28 annual meeting will include Mayor Russell Schmidt’s “State of the City” address.

A free supper is 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 in the church fellowship hall, 108 Wathen St.

Coupland School

Things have been busy at Coupland School, with a “Pirates Day” March 7, a St.

Patrick’s Day celebration March 17 and a University Interscholastic League reward party March 21. “Students in the second through the eighth grades who competed in the academic UIL competition and those who attended all the practices were invited to have ice cream and extra recess to celebrate their hard work,” said Principal Kate Knapek.

St. Peter’s

The Rev. Dr. Burt Burleson assumes pastorship of the church June 16, taking over from interim cleric the Rev. Linda McWhorter. Burleson holds a bachelor’s degree from Baylor University, a Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry from Austin Presbyterian Seminary.

He and his wife, Julie, have two children, Abby and Brandt, and one grandchild, Collins.

Meanwhile, an outdoor Easter sunrise service is set for 7:15 a.m. April 20. It will be moved inside the sanctuary in case of bad weather.

A traditional Easter service is 10:15 a.m. with a children’s Easter Pageant during worship and an Easter egg hunt on the lawn afterwards.

In addition, neighbors are invited to the Community Connections coffee at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesdays.

The next free Community Senior Luncheon is May 20.

All area seniors are welcome, organizers said, and donations are accepted.

St. Peter’s Church is partnering with the Taylor Lions Club to collect used eyeglasses including prescription, readers and sunglasses.

Children’s glasses are especially needed, an official said.

Drop them off at the church office, 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday.

The Heart of Texas Association of the United Church of Christ will hold its spring meeting 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5.

New Sweden Church New Sweden Lutheran Church, 12809 New Sweden Church Road, hosts a 9:30 a.m.

Saturday, April 5, fourth Annual Bicycle Blessing on the church steps as part of the Rosedale Bicycle Ride.

On Good Friday, April 18, there will be an evening fish fry followed by a movie. New Sweden will celebrate Easter Sunday with a Sunrise service at the cemetery, breakfast, Easter egg hunt and worship with Holy Communion.

Also, the annual New Sweden Church Heritage Festival is 3-7 p.m. April 26.

Visit Manda School at 3 p.m. Tour the Swedish Heritage Center and view the displays at 5 p.m.

A Swedish meal is 6 p.m. and it’s $15 for adults and $8 for children 10 years and under. The program in the sanctuary is “Swedish Homes on the Prairie.”

Meanwhile, New Sweden is starting monthly “Homesteading and Everyday Living” classes open to church members and friends.

Subjects include bread making, auto repair, raising animals, gardening, making candles, health, teaching CPR and more.
