CAMERON — Senior Mikayla Velasquez’s grand slam in the fifth inning lifted the Thrall Tigerettes varsity softball team to a 6-1 win over Cameron on Tuesday, April 4.
Thrall’s offense struggled early but broke through with a six-run fifth inning to take control.
The Tigerettes had an opportunity to score in the first inning but stranded runners on first and second. Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when Cameron stole home to take a 1-0 lead.
Thrall answered in the fifth. An error, a walk, and a single from freshman Piper Hernandez set the stage for Velasquez, who launched a grand slam to put the Tigerettes ahead 4-1. Junior Riley Luton followed with a solo home run, extending the lead to 5-1, and freshman Mireya Torres added an RBI double to cap the scoring at 6-1.
Senior pitcher Miley Pokorny dominated in the circle, throwing a complete game with 14 strikeouts while allowing just one run. She kept the Lady Yoe off the board the rest of the way to seal the victory.
With the win, the Tigerettes improved to 13-9 overall and 4-3 in district play. They were set to close out the series against Cameron on Friday, April 4, before hosting Lexington on Tuesday, April 8.
