The Hutto Hippos varsity baseball team split its home-andhome series against the Round Rock Westwood Warriors, winning 1-0 in Game 1 on Saturday, March 29, before falling 5-4 in Game 2 on Monday, March 31.

Game 1

A pitcher’s duel unfolded as both teams remained scoreless until the seventh inning.

Hutto finally broke the stalemate in the top of the seventh, scoring the game’s only run on a wild pitch.

Senior Jackson Reed earned the win, throwing six scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

Sophomore Kalib Wertz secured the save, keeping the Warriors off the board in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Roman Grametbauer led the Hippos at the plate, going 3-for-3.

Game 2

Scoring picked up in Game 2, with Westwood taking an early 2-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly. After a scoreless third, senior Tre Fields put the Hippos on the board with an RBI single in the fourth, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

The Warriors extended their lead with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth, capitalizing on a Hutto error to go up 5-1. The Hippos fought back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs on a wild pitch and another on a senior Michael Elquist RBI single to make it 5-4. However, their comeback bid fell short as they went down in order in the seventh.

Hutto now sits at 8-11 overall and 3-3 in district play. The Hippos faced Round Rock on Tuesday, April 1, before returning home to host the Dragons on Friday, April 4, at 7 p.m.
