HOLLAND — The Granger Lady Lions varsity softball team came up short in a 10-9 loss to the Holland Hornets on Tuesday, March 25.
Granger had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh with runners on first and second, but a flyout ended the Lady Lions’ comeback hopes.
Holland took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning after loading the bases and driving in two runs with a single.
Granger responded in the bottom half as Senior Marissa Hall scored on a groundout to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Lady Lions tied the game at 2-2 in the second when sophomore first baseman Kayla Weaver hit an RBI double.
Granger’s offense came alive in the third.
Hall scored on a wild pitch, and junior short stop Izzy Tavernier hit an inside-the-park home run to put the Lady Lions ahead 4-2.
Weaver added an RBI single, and another run was walked in to extend the lead to 6-2.
Junior utility player Ariana Herrera got the start for Granger, holding Holland scoreless in the second and third innings. However, the Hornets broke through in the fourth, scoring four runs to tie the game at 6-6. Granger quickly responded, reclaiming an 8-6 lead on RBI singles from freshman catcher Rylinn Hamby and Herrera.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Holland tied the game again at 8-8 with a two-run single in the sixth. The Lady Lions then hit into a double play to end their half of the inning, and the Hornets capitalized, scoring twice on an error and an RBI single to take a 10-8 lead.
Granger tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the deficit to 10-9 on an RBI single from freshman utility player Skyla Thorsen, but ultimately fell short.
The Lady Lions dropped to 6-7-1 overall and 3-3 in district play.
They returned to action against Rosebud-Lott on Friday, March 28, before facing Bartlett on Tuesday, April 1, at 6 p.m.
