Lady Hippos edge Rangers 3-1

CEDAR PARK — The Hutto Lady Hippos softball team defeated Vista Ridge, 3-1, after senior Jayda Gallegos' two-run double in the top of the second inning proved to be the difference. Gallegos finished 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs.

Both teams were scoreless in the first inning as freshman pitcher Bailey Kelly got the start for Hutto, throwing five innings and allowing just one run. The Lady Hippos broke the tie in the second when a walk and a single set up Gallegos’ basesclearing double, giving Hutto a 2-0 lead.

Hutto extended its lead in the third when senior Mia Sanchez drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-0. The game turned into a pitcher’s duel from there, as neither team scored over the next three innings.

Sophomore pitcher Molly Krieg entered in relief of Kelly, pitching a scoreless sixth inning before surrendering a run in the seventh on a groundout. The Lady Hippos sealed the win when freshman Teagan Coombs caught a fly ball for the final out.

Hutto improved to 5-9 overall and 5-3 in district play and has now won five of its last six games. The Lady Hippos return to action Tuesday, March 25, when they travel to Stony Point for a 7 p.m. matchup.
