The Taylor Lady Ducks varsity softball team fell 6-5 to the Jarrell Cougars on Tuesday, March 20, dropping to 5-8 overall and 0-2 in district play.
Taylor started strong, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Enicia Quintanilla drove in a run with an RBI single, and fellow sophomore Kambri Oglesby capped the inning with a tworun home run to give the Lady Ducks a 5-0 lead.
Jarrell responded in the second, taking advantage of a Taylor error to spark a two-run inning, cutting the lead to 5-2. The Cougars added another run in the third to make it 5-3.
Both teams were held scoreless over the next three innings, and Taylor carried a 5-3 lead into the seventh.
However, the Lady Ducks couldn’t hold on, as another defensive miscue in the seventh led to a two-out rally for Jarrell. The Cougars scored on an RBI double before taking the lead with a two-run home run.
Taylor had a chance to respond in the bottom of the inning, putting runners on first and second with no outs, but couldn’t push across the tying run.
Freshman pitcher Payton Burrow took the loss, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits while striking out six in seven innings.
Taylor looked to bounce back against Burnet on Friday, March 21, before traveling to face Gateway Preparatory on Tuesday, March 25, at 7 p.m.
