The Taylor Ducks varsity soccer teams will open postseason play this week. The boys will face La Vega on Thursday, March 20, at 5 p.m. at Salado High School, while the girls will take on China Spring on Friday, March 21, at 5:30 p.m. at Belton High School.
Boys
The Ducks face a tough challenge against La Vega, which finished a perfect 18-0 in district play. The Pirates are led by standout underclassmen sophomore Ramiro Varela and freshman Angel Cervantes Calvillo. Varela averages nearly two goals per game, making defensive containment crucial for Taylor.
The Ducks, however, have been solid defensively, recording seven shutouts this season. Key players include Aaron Grimaldo, Walter Calvac, and Adrik Campos, all of whom will need strong performances to pull off an upset.
Taylor will look to avoid an early firstround exit after falling to Marlin in last season’s playoff opener.
Girls
The Lady Ducks will also face a difficult test against China Spring, known for its high-powered offense. The Cougars are led by Skylar Hicks, who has scored 30 goals this season. Containing Hicks will be a priority if Taylor hopes to advance.
The Lady Ducks counter with a talented roster, including freshman Samantha Schroeder, who leads the team with 19 goals. Kaitlyn Crane, the team’s second-leading scorer, will also be a key factor in the matchup.
Last season, Taylor advanced to the second round of the playoffs after defeating Robinson before falling to Needville. The Lady Ducks will look to build on that success this year.
