ROUND ROCK — The Hutto Lady Hippos varsity softball team used an 11-run fifth inning to secure a 15-0 run-rule victory over Round Rock Westwood on Friday, March 7. Senior outfielder Makayla Martinez and junior first baseman M’Kayla Hicks led the team, going 5-for-8 at the plate with 10 RBIs.
The Hippos added two runs in the top of the first after a triple from senior center fielder Mia Sanchez and a sacrifice fly from junior second baseman Sophie McElyea made it 1-0. They plated another run on an RBI single from Hicks to make it 2-0.
Hutto added two more runs in the second and third innings — one on a bases-loaded walk and another on a sacrifice fly — to extend the lead to 4-0.
Freshman pitcher Bailey Kelley got the start on the mound, allowing no runs on two hits with five strikeouts. Sophomore pitcher Molly Kreig came in for relief.
A single and an error sparked an 11-run inning for the Hippos as Hicks delivered a two-RBI single to make it 6-0 and Martinez followed with a three-run home run to push the lead to 9-0. Hutto tacked on six more runs, with Hicks and Martinez leading the offensive surge.
Hutto improved to 2-8 overall and 2-2 in district play, marking its second straight run-rule victory. The Hippos were back in action against Manor on Tuesday, March 11, before traveling to Cedar Ridge on Friday, March 14, at 7 p.m.
