CORPUS CHRISTI — The Hutto Hippos varsity baseball team finished 3-2 over the weekend at the Cabaniss Sports Complex in Corpus Christi.
Day 1
Hutto split its two matchups on the opening day of the tournament, defeating Falfurrias 7-1 before falling to London 10-0. Darey Esparza led the Hippos with two RBIs against Falfurrias, while junior pitcher Braxton Parker earned the win on the mound. Hutto struggled offensively against London and was run-ruled in four innings. Sophomore pitcher Kalib Wertz took the loss.
Day 2
The Hippos once again went 1-1, falling to San Antonio East Central 5-0 before edging Corpus Christi King 3-2.
Hutto’s offensive struggles continued against East Central as the team was held scoreless for nine straight innings.
Junior utility player Noah Castillo took the loss.
Against King, the Hippos found some rhythm at the plate, with Esparza leading the way again with two RBIs. Kyler Klaus picked up the win.
vs. Warren
Hutto closed out the tournament with a 4-2 victory over San Antonio Warren.
The Hippos jumped out early, scoring four runs in the first two innings. Esparza put Hutto on the board in the first, while senior utility player Jadyn Saxbury, senior catcher Warner McCarty and senior outfielder Jayden Littles each drove in a run in the second.
Senior pitcher Jackson Reed delivered a strong performance on the mound, throwing a complete game. He allowed two runs on four hits while striking out eight.
Hutto improved to 4-4 and will travel to Leander High School to take on Stratford on Thursday, March 6, at 2 p.m.
