THRALL — Senior Maverick McAllister and sophomores Jack Gustafson and Ty Matthews combined for a no-hitter in Thrall’s 15-0 victory over Hempstead on Tuesday, Feb. 25. The trio totaled 12 strikeouts in the shutout as McAllister picked up the win.
The Tigers struck early, loading the bases in the bottom of the first before sophomore first baseman Gus Navejas delivered a two-run single. A basesloaded walk brought in another run, giving Thrall a 3-0 lead.
Thrall extended its advantage in the second, drawing three consecutive walks to load the bases again. A throwing error by the Cougars allowed two more runs to score, making it 5-0.
Navejas then cleared the bases with a three-run homer, capping the inning and pushing the lead to 8-0. He finished 3-for-3 at the plate with six RBIs.
The Tigers added six more runs in the third, highlighted by sophomore utility player Weston Smiley’s two-run homer to make it 14-0. Thrall tacked on its final run in the fourth on a wild pitch.
Thrall improved to 2-0 and will look to stay unbeaten when it hosts the Thrall Tournament from Feb. 27 to March 1. The Tigers will take on Luling, Silsbee, Holland and Jarrell.
