SMITHVILLE — Senior Triston Vega powered the Ducks to a 7-4 victory over the Smithville Tigers on Monday, Feb. 25, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

Both teams were scoreless in the first inning before the Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI double. The Ducks tied it at 1 in the third when Vega drove in junior Angel Rodriguez with an RBI single.

Neither team scored in the fourth, but Taylor’s bats came alive in the fifth. Three consecutive singles loaded the bases before Vega delivered a two-run double.

Senior Mario Aquero followed with a tworun single and freshman utility player Tayden Talley capped the inning with an RBI single to extend the lead to 6-1. Vega added an insurance run in the sixth with another RBI single.

Smithville attempted a late rally in the seventh by taking advantage of a couple of walks and errors, but Taylor secured the win on a groundout.

Tally earned the win, pitching five innings and allowing one run on two hits while striking out four. Senior utility player Kaddy Maravilla pitched two innings in relief, giving up three runs.

Taylor (1-1) will visit Giddings on Friday, Feb. 28, at 5 p.m. before returning home to host the Buffaloes on Saturday, March 1, at 11 a.m.
