Future Chefs compete

Students at Main Street Intermediate School were invited to enter the contest by submitting a favorite recipe for consideration. The theme for this year was recipes inspired by a book or movie and transformed into a healthier version of the original.

Students at Main Street Intermediate School were invited to enter the contest by submitting a favorite recipe for consideration. The theme for this year was recipes inspired by a book or movie and transformed into a healthier version of the original.

Harper Doss won this year’s championship title with her “Dragons Love Tacos – Taco Bake.” Her child nutrition mentor was Nuvia Hernandez, kitchen manager at T.H. Johnson Elementary School. She received a 15-piece pot and pan set, a 20-piece mixing bowl set, a 15-piece kitchen utensil set, a set of kid chef cookbooks, a kids Fitbit, a cutting board and hot pads.

Doss’ recipe will be served at lunch in the MSI cafeteria on April 20, and she is now entered in the National Future Chef competition. The national winner’s recipe will be incorporated in all kindergarten through 12th grades’ Sodexo menus in the country.

The six chefs earning honorable mention are Emiliano Jiminez for meatloaf, Ruben Rochez for “Luca Spaghetti,” Steven Roy for spaghetti with meatballs, Christian Parada-Ortiz for pupusas, Ava Galvan for whole wheat banana bread and Daniel Beck for “Dinner in Disguise.”

Each chef earning honorable mention received a mixing bowl set, measuring cups, measuring spoons, kitchen utensils, hot pads, oven mitts and kitchen towels. Mentors for the

Mentors for the Future Chefs were Nuvia Hernandez, THJ cafeteria manager; Yesenia Sanchez, Tayor High School cafeteria assistant manager; Elyse Bragg, Taylor Middle School cafeteria manager; Patricia Glasenapp, catering specialist; Celina Arellano, Naomi Pasemann Elementary School cafeteria manager; Monica Rivera, TMS food service; and Bethany Hall-Albavera, MSI cafeteria manager.

Judges for the event were MSI Principal Mario Ramos, Taylor Mayor Brandt Rydell, Taylor ISD School Board President Marco Ortiz, Superintendent Devin Padavil, previous Future Chefs winner Katelyn Oglesby, and Taylor ISD Chief Financial Officer Lorine David.

Lindsey Gage is Taylor ISD’s director of child nutrition, Jamie Hackett is assistant director and Angelica Cazalas is the administrative assistant.
