Hippos go 0-4 in College Station

COLLEGE STATION — The Hutto Hippos varsity softball team went 0-4 in the College Station Tournament on Feb. 13-14, struggling on the mound as they allowed 29 runs across four games.

Day One

Hutto opened tournament play with a 7-3 loss to Liberty Hill. The Panthers jumped out to a fast start, scoring seven runs in the first two innings to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Sophomore pitcher Molly Kreig came in and stabilized the game, throwing four straight scoreless innings. The Hippos attempted a late rally with a three-run inning, but the deficit was too much to overcome.

In their second game of the day, the Hippos fell 5-4 to Robinson after surrendering four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Hutto built a 3-0 lead in the third inning before the Rockets responded with a run in the fourth. The Hippos added an insurance run in the sixth, but Robinson’s late surge proved decisive.

Day Two

Hutto’s bats went cold in a 7-0 loss to Klein. The Hippos struggled to find their footing early, as the Bearkats plated six runs in the first two innings. Klein tacked on an insurance run later in the game, while Hutto managed just two hits.

The tournament concluded with a 10-1 loss to College Station. The Cougars once again capitalized on Hutto’s early pitching struggles, scoring seven runs in the first two innings. The Hippos ended their scoring drought with a run in the third, but College Station added three more to seal the victory.

Junior M’Kayla Hicks and freshman Bailey Kelly led the Hippos offensively. Hutto looks to bounce back when it hosts Stony Point on Monday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m.
