The Taylor Ducks varsity baseball team dropped its season opener to the Cameron Yoe Yoemen on Monday, Feb. 17, falling 4-2.
Despite out-hitting the Yoemen, 9-5, the Ducks struggled to bring runners home.
Taylor started strong, holding Yoe scoreless in the first inning and plating two runs in the second. Senior Trista Vega, who accounted for the Ducks’ only RBI, finished 2-for-3 at the plate. However, Taylor’s offense stalled after that, failing to score for the remainder of the game.
Cameron Yoe capitalized, tying the game at two in the third inning. The matchup turned into a pitcher’s duel until the Yoemen broke the tie with two runs in the sixth. Taylor couldn’t rally and dropped its season opener.
Sophomore Mario Newman took the loss, pitching five innings and allowing two runs on five hits. Seniors Kaddy Maravilla and Mario Aguero each pitched one inning. Newman and senior Xavier Juarez both went 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Ducks will look to bounce back in the Salado Tournament, set for Feb. 20-22.
