THE CZECH IS IN THE MAIL
Greetings, Eastern Williamson County.
It has been two weeks since I began my new venture as the area editor of the Taylor Press and Elgin Courier. I have met some of you and look forward to meeting more of you.
After two weeks of commuting south on Texas 95 from Temple, my family and I will be moving into an apartment in Taylor. We look forward to this new chapter in our lives as Taylorites.
In the two weeks I’ve been here, I’ve learned that I share a birthday with former Taylor First Lady Leslie Hill. We were both born March 15, and we’ll both be turning 21 — again.
I also learned that I grew up on the same street as Greg Redden — Eagle Road — in Temple. Mind you, there are a few years of separation between us, but he probably just has a few more numbers after the plus-sign following 21.
Another connection I have with Taylor is Earven Flowers. Like Redden and I, Flowers is a Temple native.
He’s doing a great job as the head football coach and athletic director at Taylor High School. Let’s hope the Ducks can have another healthy, successful season under Flowers in 2025.
Speaking of Ducks, my 3-year-old and 1-year-old daughters both love the song, “1 little, 2 little, 3 little duckies.” They look forward to being Taylor Ducks in the future.
I’m a career newspaperman with 20-years’ experience — primarily in the world of sports. While I will occasionally dabble in sports either through the “Around the Water Cooler” show or if my number is called to cover a game, I have spent most of the last seven years as a managing editor, general manager or police- and fire-beat writer.
The last six months, I was the latter for the Temple Daily Telegram. Covering police and fire was my weakest link, but I managed to pull it off.
I will write about law enforcement, fire services and the courts for the Press as well as oversee the editorial production of the paper. Please feel free to send me any news tips, especially those that require first responders.
In closing, this is actually the fourth newspaper under the Granite Publications/ Granite Media Partners Inc. umbrella where I have worked. I was in Madisonville and former Granite papers in Gonzales and Center during the early 2010s.
It is great to be back with Granite. It is great to be a part of the Taylor community, too.
Come see me. Until then, the Czech is in the mail.
