The Taylor Ducks girls varsity basketball team is set for a tough test in the bi-district round of the playoffs, facing the La Vega Pirates on Monday, Feb. 10, at 6:30 p.m. at the Little River Academy High School gym.
Taylor enters the postseason as the underdog against a dominant La Vega squad that steamrolled through Class 4A Region III District 23 with a perfect 10-0 record. The Ducks will lean on senior guard Sophia Fisher, who averages 10.5 points per game, and sophomore forward Tianna Candee, the team’s top rebounder with 9.5 per game. Taylor will need a strong offensive performance to pull off the upset.
Defensively, the Ducks must find a way to slow down La Vega’s high-powered attack, led by senior center Angela Carroll, who averages 14.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Candee will likely be tasked with containing Carroll in the paint, but Taylor’s defense will also have its hands full with the Pirates’ dynamic backcourt duo — senior guards Alaysia Gude and CeMaria Kelly — who both average over 12 points per game.
With a win, the Ducks would advance to the area round of the playoffs with an opponent, time and date to be determined.
