GEORGETOWN — The Taylor Ducks boys varsity basketball team lost 74-42 to the Gateway College Preparatory Gators on Friday, Jan.

24. The Ducks’ shooting woes continued as they shot just 31% from the field.

Taylor got off to a slow start, falling behind 13-4 late in the first quarter. Junior guard Kadrien Dreary hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 13-7. Dreary led the team in scoring with 14 points on 6-of-18 shooting. However, the offensive struggles persisted as the Gators outscored the Ducks 25-12 in the second quarter, taking a 40-19 lead into halftime. The struggles continued in the second half as Taylor failed to stop Gateway’s offense, which shot 41% from the field. Senior forward Eli Laurence showed some fight in the final period with a 3-pointer. Laurence finished with 11 points on 5-of-12 shooting and four rebounds. Senior guard TJ Whybrew, who has averaged close to 20 points per game this season, was held to just seven points.

With the loss, the Ducks’ playoff hopes dim further as they fall to 2-6 in district play. Taylor is currently fifth in the district, two games behind Burnet, which the Ducks will face in a must-win game on Tuesday, Jan.

28. Taylor will also host Marble Falls on Friday, Jan. 31, at 7:30 p.m.
