MILANO — The Granger Lady Lions varsity basketball team picked up their ninth consecutive district victory in a 60-28 win over the Milano Eagles on Wednesday, Jan. 23. Junior power forward Victoria Castillo led the team with 15 points, including four 3-pointers.
The Lady Lions dominated from start to finish as senior guard Sofia Bernal opened the game with a 3-pointer to take an early 3-0 lead. Bernal finished with 10 points. Granger continued to dominate, holding a 14-5 advantage at the end of the first quarter after Castillo hit two straight 3-pointers.
The Lady Lions took their first double-digit lead of the game, 16-5, on a layup from Bernal. Granger then went on a 9-0 run to extend the advantage to 25-5. The Eagles fought back with a 10-0 run of their own to make it 25-15 going into halftime. Bernal hit a jump shot out of the break to make it 28-15, which sparked a 12-3 run heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Lions showed no mercy as they outscored the Eagles 20-5 in the final period. Junior forward Abigail Couch had seven points, while senior Marissa Hall tallied eight. The Lady Lions improved their record to 22-6 overall and 9-0 in district play. Granger has now beaten its last five opponents by an average of 31.6 points. The Lady Lions will be back in action against Rosebud-Lott on Friday, Jan. 24, before traveling to McDade on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 6 p.m.
