The Taylor Garden Club held its 14th annual Run for the Roses at Murphy Park despite cold weather, which didn’t deter the determined runners who participated in the 5K and 10K races.
Although the morning was chilly, race coordinator Penny Ryschestky said the conditions Jan. 18 were significantly better compared to last year.
“Last year, the weather was really bad — it was extremely cold and miserable,” Ryschestky said. “This year, the weather was absolutely perfect. It has been cold in past years, but today it was beautiful.”
According to organizers, the event was a success, with 96 people registering and 78 completing the races.
Proceeds from the event benefit the community, as the Taylor Garden Club uses the funds to provide scholarships for high school students pursuing horticulture and to make improvements to Murphy Park.
“It gives us the opportunity to beautify the parks and provide kids with assistance for college,” Ryschestky said. “That’s what’s important to us — giving back to the community.”
Participants were treated to coffee, donated by Sirloin Stockade, and breakfast tacos, provided by sponsor Fajitas on Wheels, before and after the race.
Volunteers were on hand to assist the runners and ensure everyone’s safety during the event.
The race featured several standout performances.
Justin Young of Odessa finished first in the 5K with a chip time of 24:42.7.
Mark Bond claimed first place in the 10K, finishing with a time of 41:41.3.
Rachel Bond was the only participant to race with a stroller, completing the 5K with a time of 29:36.76.
In keeping with the run’s theme, roses were awarded to top performers as a special prize for their achievements.
