Volunteers needed to help crime victims

The Victim Services Unit of the Taylor Police Department needs additional volunteers, law officers said.

Successful applicants are trained to respond to emergency situations, providing ion-scene response to victims of crime or trauma, according to a release.

Duties include directly working with crime victims, law-enforcement officers and other first responders, officials said.

The minimum commitment is two 12-hour shifts per month.

Volunteers assist in cases involving homicides, suicides/ attempted suicides, natural deaths, death notifications, fires, child/elder abuse, family violence, sexual assaults, traffic accidents, general-welfare concerns, violent crimes and natural disasters.

The unit responds to calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Volunteers support victims and their families, assist police and provide resources and information about the criminal-justice system.

Applicants must be 21 or older, live in or close to Taylor, pass a background check and have a valid Texas driver’s license. Those meeting these requirements may be called for an in-person interview.

In addition, members of the unit must be physically capable of navigating difficult terrain, able to stand for long periods, work in all weather conditions, climb multiple flights of stairs and lift at least 30 pounds.
