The Taylor Ducks boys varsity basketball team earned a dramatic 85-84 victory over the Salado Eagles on Friday, Jan. 17. The win ended a fourgame losing streak, improving the Ducks to 11-10 overall and 2-4 in district play.
Senior TJ Whybrew led the way for Taylor, finishing with 29 points on 10-of-26 shooting. The Ducks had plenty of offensive support, with five players scoring in double figures. Junior guard Kadrien Dreary contributed 15 points, sophomore forward Landon Coulter added 13, senior forward Eli Laurence posted 14 and senior Harrison Tate chipped in 11. The Ducks shot 42% from the field, a significant improvement after struggling to shoot above 40% in their previous four matchups.
Taylor dominated on the boards, pulling down 45 rebounds, led by Whybrew’s 11. The Ducks also addressed one of their key weaknesses, limiting turnovers to just 11, which prevented the Eagles from capitalizing on transition opportunities. The nail-biting victory was crucial for Taylor, as it keeps the Ducks in the hunt for postseason contention. They currently sit fifth in the district standings, one game behind Burnet.
The Ducks return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 22, against Lampasas before traveling to face Gateway College Preparatory on Friday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m.
