The Taylor Ducks girls varsity basketball team earned a 47-40 victory over the Salado Eagles on Friday, Jan. 17. The win marks Taylor’s second consecutive victory, improving the Ducks to 12-16 overall and 2-3 in district play.
Taylor started slow, falling behind 6-1 before going on a 7-0 run to take its first lead at 8-6. Senior guard Sophia Fisher extended the lead with a threepointer to make it 11-6. In the second quarter, senior forward Kionayh Rivers knocked down back-to-back threes, giving the Ducks a 20-12 advantage.
However, Taylor’s offense stalled as Salado responded with an 8-1 run, narrowing the Ducks’ lead to 21-20 at halftime.
Coming out of the break, both teams traded baskets, and Salado briefly reclaimed the lead at 28-27. Taylor answered with a decisive 16-11 run, giving the Ducks a 43-39 advantage late in the fourth quarter. Rivers sealed the win with a pivotal block in the final minutes, preventing Salado from closing the gap.
The Ducks shot 27% from the field but controlled the glass, outrebounding the Eagles 42-37.
Taylor, currently sitting fifth in the district standings, will aim to continue its postseason push with a critical matchup against 2-3 Lampasas on Tuesday, Jan. 21. The Ducks will then host Jarrell on Friday, Jan. 24, at 6:15 p.m.
