MLK march returns for 20th year

MLK march returns for 20th year

After 20 years, organizers say Taylor’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day march may be the biggest celebration in Williamson County to honor the late civil-rights activist.

The Monday, Jan. 20, event draws not only Taylor residents but also those from surrounding cities and towns, such as Hutto, Elgin, Granger, Rockdale, Round Rock and Thorndale.

MLK Committee Chairman Shorty Mitchell encourages everyone to attend, adding the unity promoted by the event is something that instills a sense of pride.

Weather permitting, community members can march alongside Taylor, Williamson County and state leaders to remember King’s legacy.

Residents can begin lining up at the Dickey-Givens Community Center, 1015 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., at 8 a.m. until the procession begins at 9 a.m.

The parade will go down Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, through downtown Taylor and reach Heritage Square, 400 N. Main St., where festivities will begin around 10 a.m.

The program will feature speeches from various community leaders, performances by the Main Street Elementary School Chorale and the First Baptist Church of Taylor Praise Team, an award ceremony for the Youth Art and Essay Contest and a tribute to King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

In the event of bad weather, the program will take place at the Taylor Public Library, 801 Vance St.
