Torres leads Ducks to 2-0 victory

Sophomore forward Adan Torres scored both of Taylor High School’s only two goals this Tuesday as the Ducks took down La Grange High School at Taylor High School to start district play.

Torres started the game off with a goal in the first minute and capped his night off with a rebound in the 64th.

“It’s his first year on varsity,” Head Coach James Wooten said. “[He’s] trying to figure out how he can help those older upperclassmen who’ve been here before. You know, I’m proud of him.”

This win extends Taylor’s winning streak to two and its winning percentage on the season to .500. With a two-game road stretch ahead, the Ducks will face Smithville and Giddings. Wooten said this performance is something to emulate.

“I’m really glad of the resilience and just the way we played tonight,” Wooten said. “We played a full 80-minute game and, you know, that’s what you want to see every week.”

Defensively, Taylor stuck together to keep junior forward Jeffery Cabrera, the leading district goal-scorer, out of shooting range. Wooten said this high-pressure defense proved essential to ball control.

“I think we solidified the middle of the field really well and we also did a good job of applying high pressure,” Wooten said. “Those are two things we had not done consistently well this year.”

Taylor will go on the road to face the Smithville Tigers at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17.
