The Taylor Ducks girls varsity basketball team went 2-2 in the Fairfield Tournament on Dec. 12-14. The Ducks lost their first two games against Connally and Little River Academy before defeating Mount Vernon and Mexia.
Vs. Connally
Taylor’s offensive struggles continued, shooting just 18% from the field and scoring 21 points in a 49-21 loss to the Cadets on Dec.
12. Turnovers were also an issue, as the Ducks combined for 27. Senior guard Zakaya Frederick scored a team-high seven points on 2-of-8 shooting. Senior guard Sophia Fisher and junior point guard Aubriana Alderete each added four points.
Vs. Little River Academy
Taylor’s shooting woes carried over as it shot a tournament-low 14% from the field in a 49-15 loss to the Bumblebees on Dec. 13. The Ducks had another sloppy game, committing 20 turnovers and struggling to maintain possession.
Senior guard Kionayh Rivers recorded a team high of six points and six rebounds. Alderete added four points.
Vs. Mount Vernon and Mexia
The Ducks finally got their offense going, defeating the Mount Vernon Tigers 43-27 on Dec. 13 and the Mexia Black Cats 35-23 on Dec. 14. Taylor shot 35% from the field against the Tigers — a massive improvement from their previous two matchups.
The Ducks’ offense took a step back against the Black Cats, but their defense stepped up to secure the win and finish even in the tournament. Taylor now sits at 6-12 overall. The Ducks will take on Lake Belton on Dec. 17 before traveling to La Grange on Friday, Dec. 20, at 4 p.m.
