The Hutto Hippos girls basketball team lost 44-34 to the Vista Ridge Rangers on Friday, Dec. 6. The Hippos fell to 8-9 overall and 1-3 in district play, while the Rangers improved to 14-3 overall and 3-0 in district play.
The Hippos fought hard throughout the game as senior guard Emerie Garay hit an early 3-pointer to put Hutto up 3-2. The Rangers went on a run to take a 15-9 lead late in the first quarter, but a 3-pointer from junior forward Taylor Hicks cut the lead to 15-12 at the end of the quarter.
Vista Ridge took a commanding lead in the second quarter, going on an 18-7 run to make it 33-19. The Hippos cut the lead to 10 late in the fourth quarter but couldn’t find enough offense to close the gap.
Hicks and junior forward Victoria Escobedo were the top performers. Hicks led the team in scoring, while Escobedo recorded multiple steals and rebounds.
The Hippos will return to action Friday, Dec. 13, on the road against Round Rock Westwood at 7 p.m.
