The Taylor Ducks varsity basketball team will open the 2024-25 season on the road against the Travis Rebels on Tuesday, Nov. 19. The Ducks will look to get off to a strong start as they hope to return to the postseason this year.
Taylor got the better of the Rebels the last time these two faced off, holding off Travis in a 73-64 victory. Senior guard TJ Whybrew had one of his best games against the Rebels, going 7-for-13 with 16 points.
Taylor will be without last season’s leading scorer, Trios Richardson, who averaged 20 points per game. The Ducks will still have plenty of veteran talent as senior forward Eli Laurence and Whybrew are back and ready to take on larger roles. Laurence averaged 10.6 points per game on 45% shooting, while Whybrew contributed 9.9 points per game on a team-high 48% shooting.
Another key player to watch is sophomore Landon Coulter, who had an impressive freshman season last year, averaging 4.5 points per game. Head Coach Stephen Gibson will be looking for Coulter to take the next step in his development as the Ducks attempt to replace lost production.
Travis is coming off a 7-20 season and hopes to improve on a disappointing year. Senior guard Jordan Davis leads the Rebels and can take over a game if given the chance. The Ducks must contain Davis to avoid an upset.
Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. at Travis High School.
