The Taylor Ducks girls’ varsity basketball team opened its 2024-2025 season with a pair of tough losses struggling to make shots, falling 40-27 to the Leander Lions on Friday, Nov. 1, and 61-11 to the Vandegrift Vipers on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
The Ducks started strong against Leander, with senior shooting guard Molli Kennick sinking an early 3-pointer. However, Taylor’s offense stalled as Leander responded with a 10-0 run.
Sophomore small forward Tiana Candee stood out defensively, recording a block and a steal in the early minutes. Despite her efforts, Taylor struggled to capitalize, and the Lions built a commanding 36-15 lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Ducks found some offensive rhythm, going on a 12-4 run highlighted by 3-pointers from senior shooting guard Zakaya Frederick and freshman point guard Samantha Schroeder.
Taylor finished the game shooting 32% from the field and 29% from beyond the arc.
Taylor’s offensive woes persisted against Vandegrift, managing only 11 points on 9% shooting from the field and 7% from threepoint range. The Ducks will look to regroup and improve as they head to Rouse High School for a tournament on Nov. 7-8 with opponents and times to be determined.
