Bartlett unit reopens after seven years

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the city of Bartlett recently announced the reopening of the Bartlett Unit in early October 2024, formerly known as the Bartlett State Jail. This unit was closed in 2017 due to a lack of inmate population, according to a news release.

With a rise in the state’s prison population and a need for additional beds, the Bartlett Unit has reopened following extensive renovations and will once again support the state’s criminal justice system.

TDCJ Executive Director Bryan Collier spoke on the unit’s potential impact on public safety.

“This reopening is positive for both TDCJ and the city of Bartlett,” Collier said in the news release. “The Bartlett Unit will not only enhance public safety by providing secure housing for inmates but also contribute to the economic growth of the community.”

The facility has a capacity of 1,049 inmates and will serve as an innovation unit for the agency, focusing on unique approaches to rehabilitation and reintegration.

Bartlett Mayor Chad Mees also emphasized its economic benefits.

“The Bartlett Unit opening will bring a significant boost to our local economy by offering much-needed jobs, from corrections officers to support staff,” Mees said in the news release.
