WINNER TAKE ALL

The Hutto Hippos varsity football team will face the McNeil Mavericks on Friday, Nov. 8. The Hippos are currently the fifth seed in the district, and the Mavericks are the fourth — whoever wins will earn a spot in the playoffs.

Hutto is coming off a disappointing home loss to Vista Ridge, where it led 31-17 in the third quarter but gave up 21 unanswered points, allowing the Rangers to claim the win. The Hippos will look to bounce back as they fight for playoff contention. Junior quarterback Kaden Stefek has led the offense, though he had an inconsistent performance last week, throwing for 263 yards and three touchdowns but committing two turnovers.

Stefek will need to avoid turnovers in this game, as they have been a recurring issue for Hutto. McNeil is led by junior quarterback Jadon Shultz, who has recorded 1,113 passing yards and 13 touchdowns this season.

The Mavericks’ offense averages 25.6 points per game.

Notable playmakers for Hutto include senior wide receiver Braeton Anderson and sophomore wide receiver Jaiden Fields.

Anderson had 78 receiving yards last week, while Fields made several impressive catches, including a one-handed touchdown grab.

Junior running back Keilan Chavies returned from injury last week but did not play in the second half due to re-injury. His availability will be crucial for the Hippos, as their running game has struggled in his absence.

Senior running back Joshua Williams and junior wide receiver Zach Christie are key players to watch for the Mavericks.

Williams leads the backfield, while Christie has been the team’s top receiver.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Maverick Stadium.
