The Taylor Ducks varsity football team will go on the road to take on the LBJ Austin Cougars on Friday, Nov. 1. The Ducks will put their four-game winning streak and undefeated district record on the line versus the fellow unbeaten Cougars.
This will be a tough matchup for the Ducks, as LBJ Austin is ranked No. 2 in the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Class 4A Division I rankings.
Head coach Earven Flowers spoke about the challenge his team faces Friday night.
“LBJ is LBJ,” Flowers said. “They are a really talented ball club, and I think we are pretty good too, so we are going to get an opportunity to show what we can do and play to the level of a quality team, and I look forward to that.” Taylor is coming off a 63-0 shutout win over Eastside Early College, while the Cougars defeated Northeast Early College 83-0 last week. The key to the game for the Ducks will be slowing down a potent Cougars offense that has averaged 52.4 points per game.
Offensively, LBJ Austin is led by senior quarterback Ali Scott and junior running back Caleb Crenshaw. Scott has accounted for more than 2,000 yards this season and 33 touchdowns, while Crenshaw has been the leading rusher with 966 yards and 15 scores.
Taylor also has its share of offensive talent with senior quarterback Eli Laurence and senior running back Andrias Fisher.
Laurence is coming off his best game of the season, throwing for 257 yards and four touchdowns, while Fisher tallied 119 yards and a score.
The Ducks’ offense has been especially productive in district play, averaging 60 points in their last four games.
Defensively, Taylor and LBJ Austin have been stout, shutting out their previous three opponents.
The Ducks are led by senior defensive tackle Kaddy Maravilla and junior linebacker Stephen Rogers.
Maravilla leads the team in tackles for loss with 13, while Rogers has 67 total tackles this season.
Junior defensive tackle Jeffrey Love leads the Cougars with 18 tackles for loss.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at I.I.
