Cases of COVID-19 continue to rise throughout Williamson County, which has caused the cancellation of the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day march and program in Taylor.
“We feel with the rise of more and more COVID-19 cases that keeps coming up that this will be in the best interest for all of us at this time,” said Shorty Mitchell, MLK Day committee chair.
Communities in the area have also canceled marches due to COVID-19, and Mitchell believed it was best to follow suit. Earlier this week, the city of Austin canceled its march, along with San Antonio, which is billed as the largest march in the nation.
“I would hate to have anything happen (to people involved),” he said.
Mitchell said the decision did not come from the city of Taylor. He and Pastor Anthony Watson, committee member, discussed the situation and made the decision to not have the event this year.
“I appreciate everyone’s time and effort who tried helping to make this a successful event that we all could’ve been proud of in Taylor,” Mitchell said.
