Speak out about area traffic

"The plan aims to reduce fatal & serious-injury crashes, while improving transportation systems for all users, including pedestrians, cyclists, public transportation users & drivers .”

The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization is giving residents a chance to sound off on solutions to traffic backups, bottlenecks and safety issues affecting Williamson, Travis and Bastrop counties for decades to come.

“The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization is seeking public feedback on the draft 2050 Regional Transportation Plan and amendments to the 20252028 Transportation Improvement Program,” according to a recent release. “CAMPO is committed to improving mobility — and ultimately, quality of life — within the region and ensuring the benefits of the transportation system are distributed fairly across all demographics throughout rural, urban and suburban areas.”

The organization plans and coordinates regional transportation projects among local governments and transportation agencies in Bastrop, Burnet, Caldwell, Hays, Travis and Williamson counties.

The organization encourages anyone with ideas about making it easier to get around the region to share those. Planners said they are especially interested in ways to reduce crashes and travel disruptions, manage travel demand and congestion, enhance safety for transportation-system users including bicycles and pedestrians, and create more travel choices and connections.

The 2025-2028 Transportation Improvement Program focuses on projects in CAMPO’s six-county region that have federal funding will start construction in the four years covered by the program. The TIP is updated every two years.

Public comment for the 2025-2028 TIP can be submitted by email, phone or mail until Nov. 8.

A public hearing will be held at the Transportation Policy Board meeting Nov. 4 in Austin and action on the amendments is expected to be approved at the Dec. 9 meeting.

The 2050 Plan is meant to address transportation needs for the next 25 years, including driving, walking, biking, transit, freight and emerging technologies including driverless cars. Planners use growth predictions to forecast transportation needs and funding opportunities and identify projects and programs likely to be implemented through 2050.

Public commenting is open through Dec. 9 for the 2050 Plan, with a second round of community outreach to take place in early 2025. Adoption of the plan is scheduled for

“The plan aims to reduce fatal and serious-injury crashes, while improving transportation systems for all users, including pedestrians, cyclists, public transportation users and drivers, with an emphasis on equitable investment in historically underserved communities,” according to the agency.

The public comment period for the safety plan is open until Nov. 18, with a second comment period in 2025. The finalized Regional Safety Action Plan will be presented in summer 2025.
