The Hutto Hippos varsity volleyball team defeated the McNeil Mavericks in straight sets on Tuesday, Oct. 8. Freshman outside hitter Ellie Witcher led Hutto with 13 kills and three serving points. Hutto improved to 19-17 overall and 7-4 in district play.
The Hippos dominated from start to finish, winning the first two sets 25-8. Hutto finished the match with a 25-12 victory in the third and final set. Senior setter/outside hitter Isabella Orton was also a key contributor for the Hippos, accounting for 10 kills and digs. Other key players included senior libero Macie Atkinson and freshman defensive specialist Teegan Combs, who combined for 22 digs.
Hutto has struggled with serve returns all season, but that wasn’t the case in this game as they successfully received 25 of McNeil’s serves.
Atkinson led the team with seven.
The Hippos are heating up at the right time, marking their second straight district win as they enter the latter part of the schedule. Hutto will look to maintain momentum on the road against the Cedar Ridge Raiders on Tuesday, Oct. 15, before hosting Stony Point on Friday, Oct. 18. Both games are set to start at 6:30 p.m.
