Hippos face tough battle versus Dragons

The Hutto Hippos varsity football team will go on the road versus the Round Rock Dragons on Friday, Oct.

11. The Hippos are coming off a 42-24 victory over Round Rock Westwood, while the Dragons defeated Manor 45-24 last week.

The Hutto offense has been impressive this season averaging over 45 points per game. Junior quarterback Kaden Stefek leads the Hippos offense as he accounted for 288 passing yards and five touchdowns last week.

His top targets have been senior wide receiver Braeton Anderson and sophomore wide receiver Jaiden Fields.

Anderson had a touchdown, while Fields accounted for 157 yards and three touchdowns versus Westwood.

Junior running back Kielan Chavies is also a player of note as he leads the Hippos backfield accounting for 101.2 rushing yards per game. Junior quarterback Jack Appl and senior running back Joaquin Maldonado lead a Round Rock offense that averages 34.5 points per game. Appl has 901 passing yards and 11 touchdowns on the year, while Maldonado has rushed for 445 yards and three scores.

The Hippos’ defense will be tested in this game as the Dragons have been more than capable of scoring on opposing defenses.

Hutto junior middle linebacker Brayden Daniel and senior linebacker Cashton Laplante anchor the defense.

Daniel leads the team in tackles with 47 on the year, while Laplante has eight tackles for loss.

Senior cornerback Noah Cockerham leads Round Rock in tackles with 41.

The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m. at Round Rock High School Dragon Stadium.
