Potters Alley seeks you

There’s still time to help beautify Taylor in a unique way. The Taylor Public Arts Advisory Board is issuing a call for proposals to refresh and add new art to “Potters Alley,” a brick alley way that extends west off the city’s Main Street in downtown Taylor.

There’s still time to help beautify Taylor in a unique way.

The Taylor Public Arts Advisory Board is issuing a call for proposals to refresh and add new art to “Potters Alley,” a brick alley way that extends west off the city’s Main Street in downtown Taylor.

“We’re excited to launch this newest public arts project in this very important downtown space,” said Richard Stone, board president. “What’s there now is very cool, but it’s beginning to fade. It’s time to refresh that art.”

According to the call, the theme of the installation will be left up to the individual artist. However, the goal of this call is to replace the aging art currently on this south-facing wall with art that renders a similar look and feel. Stone said that the art currently on this wall would be considered spontaneous, organic street art and much of it was created with spray paint.

The Public Arts board does have some guidelines. The board will not consider art that includes obscenity, nudity, hate speech or misogyny.

“We’ll select up to seven proposals for this project,” Stone said. “Each artist will be assigned a panel that is approximately 12’ wide by 8’ tall and artists can use whatever materials they wish.”

Each artist will receive a $200 materials stipend upon completion.

The deadline for this call is March 31. The board’s expectation is that the installation of the successful works should be completed by May 1.

The board has also extended its call for the community arts project along the city’s hike and bike trail. That project awards successful proposals one of the raised manhole covers on the hike and bike walk off Burkett Street, from Ninth Street down to Fourth Street. Proposals for the “Portal Project” should include one full color concept sketch.

You can find more about both projects under the “newsflash” tab on the city’s website.

For consideration on either of these projects, please send your proposal (a sketch, a brief statement and a link to any other work) and contact information to [email protected].
