Locals win trophies, cash at annual BBQ Cook Off event

Grills were smoking, the smell of meat filled the air and folks took home hand-carved trophies and prize money at the 23rd annual Taylor SPJST BBQ Cook Off Sept. 27-28.

Cash and trophies went to first through 10th places in all meat categories. For “Master Cook” and “Best Rig,” first- to third-place winners received money and hand-carved trophies created by Jesse Pospisil.

Jackpot pinto beans, cook’s choice and porkbutt participants collected cash prizes for first through fifth place as well as trophies for first through 10th place.

Czexicans’ Terry Skrhak of Taylor won the first place “Master Cook” award, while KFC BBQ’s Kenneth Cervenka of Granger took home second and Dirty BBQ’s Matt Perez, also of Granger, placed third.

The “Best Rig” award went to Your Boring Friends’ Norman Frey, a Taylor resident.

Trophies, hand-carved in the shape of Texas by Jesse Pospisil, went to the winners at the 23rd annual SPJST BBQ Cook Off on Sept. 28.
